How to be a photographer?

“It is to be a melting pot where all of life experiences are blended. To be an observer and a retainer of images. From school plays to directing Theatre, Opera and Film, Max Key has digested the expressions and gestures of people and performers. At Art school he sharpened his visual perception. Absorbing the influences of Caravaggio and other masters of tone, he aquired an acute and sensitive appreciation of light and the mystery of dark. Through theatre and film his awareness of the body and face to reveal an inner self; to capture a fleeting moment that distills a character. That is the role of the photographer and Max Key has achieved that ability.”

I am a freelance photographer specialising in actors headshots, portraits and editorial portraits.  I am also a professional theatre director and have 15 years experience of working with actors in the industry. I trained on the National Theatre Directors’ Course and work in theatre, film and opera.  I have directed in the west end and I frequently direct at most accredited drama schools in the UK. I have recently been nominated for an Olivier Award – ‘It is easy to be dead’ – Outstanding achievement in an affiliate theatre.
